PhD project: Macroevolution & conservation of Indonesian Mammals
The Macroevolution & Macroecology Group (www.macroevoeco.com) is seeking expressions of interest for a PhD research project to develop a macroevolutionary approach to large-scale conservation planning. We are investigating how an understanding of evolutionary history can inform conservation decision making by identifying species at particular risk from future climate and environmental change. You will help develop these methods further by applying them to a conservation system in the developing world, working with Indonesian partners to integrate the approach into conservation plans for Indonesian mammals. You will work within the existing policy, economic and social context of Indonesian conservation to explore how incorporating evolutionary history into the planning framework could lead to improved conservation outcomes.
The project is based in Canberra at the Research School of Biology, ANU, and is primarily computational/analytical. You should have some computational skills already(especially R), but the project will help you develop advanced skills in programming and cutting-edge methods for modelling and analysing spatial biodiversity and environmental data (GIS), molecular phylogenetic data, niche modelling, and macroevolutionary inference. There may also be opportunities to spend time working with collaborators in Indonesia and developing first-hand experience of conservation policy and practice there.
To be considered for this project you should have a suitable degree in ecology or evolution with first-class Honours (or equivalent), and be eligible for an Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship. The project does not come with independent funding for a postgraduate stipend. Support for research, travel and fieldwork costs will be provided by RSB.
