Monitoring and Modelling Tools for Ecosystem-based Adaptation in the Pacific Islands

The Secretariat for Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP) is promoting the uptake of socio-ecological systems and resilience thinking, and has developed a Framework to Guide Ecosystem-based Adaptation in the Pacific Islands Region.

This framework will inform the delivery of major GCF proposals and projects to build coastal ecosystem resilience. Achieving effective transitions to green-blue economies, including sustainable financing for environment management, are part of any set of cross-cutting solutions to build socio-ecological systems resilience. Within this framework, the current proposal will develop quantitative tools to support integrated coastal management.

The tools can integrate monitoring and modelling tools of ecological, physical and human-related processes and can be used to analyse alternatives and trade-offs to help managers and community leaders in the decision-making process. A number of different EEZ-scale problems will be selected in conjunction with SPREP leaders, and the most appropriate technologies and tools will be applied to produce integrated system analysis. The tools will encompass a combination of technologies, including sensors (drone-based or satellite) spatial analysis and modelling which will be selected in each case in consultation with SPREP leaders. This approach will be developed to assist in the selection of the best ecosystem-based strategies to support strategic planning for building resilient socio-ecological systems, appropriate to Pacific island integrated watershed and coastal problems.
