PhD Position in Seismic Imaging Applications in Gravitational Wave Physics

PhD Position in Seismic Imaging Applications in Gravitational Wave Physics

This project involves physics, geophysics, astrophysics, computing and mathematics with varying emphasises depending on the skill of the applicant.

Applications and inquiries are invited from highly qualified and motivated students wishing to pursue a PhD degree in geophysics and gravitational wave detection. The successful PhD candidate will work on seismic array optimisation, data analysis, and modelling to improve the detection capabilities of the gravitational wave detector through active measurement and subtraction or feedback of seismic signals for noise suppression. Applicants should have a BS or MS degree in Geophysics, Physics, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics with strong computing skills.

The University of Western Australia is currently ranked #91 in the world, and located in beautiful Perth, Western Australia, on the shores of the Indian Ocean. The research group has access to the state of the art seismic instrumentation, and a world-class Top50 high performance supercomputing facility.  The project is a joint UWA-CSIRO collaboration with the CSIRO&University of Western Australia (Dr Saygin), University of Texas at Dallas (Prof Lumley), and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (Prof Blair).
