Crossing boundaries: molecular interactions in malaria

Looking for a PhD that equips you with profound analytical and problem solving skills? Do you want to contribute substantially to the solution of one of the most devastating infectious diseases - Malaria?

Undertake this unique PhD program and you'll have the opportunity to spend 12 months of your PhD in Berlin at Humboldt University and 2 years in Canberra at The Australian National University, Australia's leading university.

The Alliance Berlin-Canberra aspires to address fundamental problems in malaria through an International Graduate School. Molecular insights into Plasmodium infections can generate novel evidence-based strategies to develop curative and prophylactic drugs and create immunization strategies that elicit lasting protection. The program covers four project areas:

  1. Nutrient uptake and Metabolism
  2. Parasite Genetics and Adaptations
  3. Immune Responses
  4. Host Genetics and Responses.

Cutting-edge malaria projects will be jointly performed at both institutions and PhD students will graduate with a dual PhD from both institutions. In addition there will be a customized training program (including voluntary internships) that supports the PhD students in acquiring critical skills to prepare for increasingly globalized and competitive public and private job markets.

Our goal is to train graduates to become independent, interdisciplinary, innovative researchers.
