Excellence in Science PhD Scholarship Award in Parkinsonís or Alzheimerís disease
Up to $35,000 per annum - Tax Free Scholarship Award
The Excellence in Science PhD scholarship will be awarded to outstanding applicants interested in pursuing PhD studies in the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease. The studies will be undertaken under the mentorship of Professor Bryce Vissel, Director of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney.
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease are characterized by chronic inflammation, excitotoxicity, accumulation of protein aggregates as well as synaptic and neuronal cell loss. While much is known about these diseases, the underlying causes of pathology are still largely unknown. One of our underlying hypotheses is that changes in inflammatory signaling and synaptic plasticity are drivers of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
This project will investigate changes in inflammatory signaling and/or mechanisms of synaptic changes in mouse models of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. The study will involve animal surgery, use of toxic models of Parkinson's disease, behavioural tests of learning and memory, sophisticated cell biology, immunohistochemistry and anatomy, microscopy and stereological analysis.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications: First class Honours degree (or equivalent) in Neuroscience or related field with skills in all or some of: mouse models of neurodegeneration, animal surgery, behavioural testing, tissue dissection, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, microscopy and stereology.
Applications close: Open until filled
