Experiments on ship air-wakes for helicopter landing
A PhD or Masters research project is proposed by Australia's Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to develop experimental capabilities at the University of Melbourne using the Extreme Air-Sea Interaction hybrid towing tank / wind tunnel facility.
- The experimental study will investigate the effect of ship motion onto the ship airwake on the flight deck.
- The data produced will be used for validating CFD results in the future.
- Several measurement techniques will be used to capture different types of data, e.g. PIV, hotwire, pitot probe, etc.
- The study may be extended to include blade sail investigation, depending on the time and resources available.
