Other Worlds: Forms of ‘World Literature'
Western Sydney University's Writing & Society Research Centre is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated candidate to undertake a project funded by Western Sydney University and an Australian Research Council Discover Project (ARC DP).
About the project
‘World literature' has become established as a scholarly field in its own right over the last twenty years. For the most part the concern has been with theorizing global systems of exchange, translation, and interpretation, with critics tending to work from the universal (the world) to the particular (literature). Other Worlds: Forms of World Literature sets out from the reverse perspective: we begin from the formal and thematic interests of four eminent Australian writers - Alexis Wright, Nicholas Jose, Gail Jones and J.M. Coetzee - bringing them into dialogue with each other and a team of critical respondents. The objective is to explore a vision of ‘world literature' that sets out from their idiosyncratic engagements with the literatures of the world. The premise is that creative writing is itself a way thinking, and that new theoretical possibilities arise from the exchange between literary criticism and literary practice. This will involve critical and creative dialogues between indigenous and non-indigenous Australia, Argentina and South Africa, China, and Europe, affording a unique opportunity to think about how contemporary Australian writing might meaningfully be considered in the terms of world literature.
The doctoral candidate, under the supervision of the WSU-based members of the research grant - Gail Jones, Anthony Uhlmann and Ben Etherington, with advice from Alexis Wright - or other member(s) of the Writing & Society Research Centre, will either focus on a project related to world literature (undertaking a PhD in literature), or undertake a Doctorate of Creative Arts (producing creative writing and a critical exegesis) with themes of relevance to world literature. The candidate will also have the opportunity to be an active participant in the workshops, which will also include University of Adelaide members of the team, J.M. Coetzee and Nicholas Jose.
This scholarship is open to domestic and international applicants. Applicants should:
an Australian Bachelor (Honours) degree in Literature (H2A or
H1), Masteres of Research or equivalent qualifications and
experience OR equivalent qualifications and evidence of research experience
(including publications) in literary studies, or creative writing,
particularly concerned with world literature
have demonstrated excellent academic performance
- a good understanding of literary theories and their application
- be highly motivated to undertake further study at an advanced level
- have excellent oral communication skills and good team-working experience
- research experience in literary studies
- propose a research project that works within, or parallel to the project's themes and objectives.
What does the scholarship provide
- Tax free stipend of up to $25,000 per annum for up to three years, a funded place in a doctoral program
- Funding is also available for project costs
