Excellence in Science PhD Scholarship Award in Brain Regeneration

Up to $35,000 per annum - Tax Free Scholarship Award

The Excellence in Science PhD scholarship will be awarded to outstanding applicants interested in pursuing PhD studies in brain repair, neural stem cells and neurogenesis.

The studies will be undertaken under the mentorship of Professor Bryce Vissel, Director of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney.

Stroke and other neurological disorders are characterized by the loss of neurons and neural networks. Manipulation of the brain's capacity to regenerate neurons from natural stem cells that exist in the brain is a process termed neurogenesis. Although evidence suggests that the brain's regenerative capacity is limited, it nevertheless presents an opportunity for the examination of therapeutic options for recovery from diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and other neurological thought incurable.

The aim of the project is to develop a means of stimulating the brain's own regenerative capacity following an acute injury, initially in mice. This project will involve the use of genetically modified mice and stereotaxic viral injection to investigate the functional role and networking of newly-generated neurons in learning and memory. The study will involve animal surgery, behavioural tests of learning and memory, microscopy, immunohistochemistry and stereological analysis, and/or electrophysiology.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications: First class Honours degree (or equivalent) in Neuroscience or related field with skills in all or some of: animal surgery, behavioural testing, tissue dissection, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, stereology, and/or electrophysiology.
